Noman Group has filed a defamation case against The Daily Inqilab, seeking Tk 5,000 crore in damages for publishing “false and defamatory news”.
Muradul Islam, the group’s managing director, filed the case at the 5th joint district judge court in Dhaka on Tuesday (October 29).
Inqilab Editor AMM Bahauddin and special reporter Sayed Ahmed have been made defendants, said Taufiqul Islam Khan, the plaintiff's lawyer.
He said Daily Inqilab published false, baseless and defamatory reports against Noman Group, its chairman and directors on December 4, 2022, December 21, 2022 and October 27, 2024.
The reports accused Noman Group of serious offences, including evading hundreds of crores in revenue by selling bond raw materials in the open market, embezzling bank loans and having its managing director and directors flee the country.
It also claimed the group financed the anti-discrimination student movement, among other allegations.
“Inqilab has been continuously running defamatory reports against Noman Group for a long time. Despite filing a formal complaint and legal notice, the newspaper did not acknowledge its mistakes,” said the lawyer.
He said that Noman Group was taking legal action to protect its reputation.
