Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur has said that at least 10 banks are on the brink of bankruptcy.“We don’t expect any bank to go bankrupt, although several already are in that state. There are 10 such banks. The government is trying to save them,” he said while talking to reporters on contemporary issues at Bangladesh Bank on Sunday (September 8).
The governor didn’t mention the names of these vulnerable banks.
Noting that customers will not suffer any losses regardless of the state of the banking sector, he said, “For this, the deposit insurance has been increased from Tk 1 lakh to Tk 2 lakh. The interest of 95 percent of customers in the banking sector will be ensured. No country in the world guarantees 100 percent of banking deposits. We are offering a 95 percent guarantee.”
He said that no account of any organisation was frozen from Bangladesh Bank whether it is S Alam’s or Salman F Rahman’s.
The governor also warned that Bangladesh Bank will not take responsibility if anyone buys S Alam’s property.
He said Tk 70,000 crore was taken out of the banking sector, and around Tk 30,000 crore was returned to the sector.
