A Dhaka court on Sunday (September 29) sent former acting editor of the daily Amar Desh Mahmudur Rahman after he surrendered in a case filed on charge of an attempt to abduct and murder Sajib Wajed Joy, son of the ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
He was sentenced to seven years in jail in his absence in the case.
Mahmudur Rahman came to the court at 10:45 am to surrender in this case and lawyers applied for bail on his behalf on the condition of appeal.
After the hearing, the court of additional chief metropolitan magistrate, Dhaka, Mahbubul Haque denied bail and ordered to send him to jail. At the same time, the court granted his division at the jail.
On August 17, 2023, Mahmudur was sentenced by the court of additional chief metropolitan magistrate Asaduzzaman Noor.
Senior journalist Shafique Rehman and Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskrit Sangtha leaders Mohammadullah, Rizvi Ahmed Sejar, and Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan were also convicted in the same case.
According to the case statement, the accused held a meeting at home and abroad for kidnapping and killing Sajib Wajed, who was the then ICT adviser to prime minister Sheikh Hasina in
Inspector Fazlur Rahman of Detective Branch filed the case with the Paltan police station on August 3, 2015, and submitted a charge sheet on February 19, 2018.
Mahmudur Rahman returned home on Friday after spending over five and a half years in exile in Turkey. He faced the wrath of the then AL government for publishing various news.
Earlier, he served as the chair of the Board of Investment with the status of a state minister and later joined Bangla daily Dainik Amar Desh as the acting editor.
He was arrested in June 2010 first and again in April 2013, during when the government shut down Amar Desh. He went abroad after coming out of jail on bail in the case.
