Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of City University holds Freshers’ Reception & Farewell, FALL-20

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of City University (CU) has
hosted the Freshers’ Reception of the 63rd and 42nd batches of the
Department of English Language and Literature ( DELL) and the
Department of Law, respectively. On the same day, the farewell
programs of the 52nd and 31st batches of the respective departments
were also arranged.
Respected Vice Chancellor Brig Gen Prof. Dr. Engr. Md.Lutfor Rahman
(Retd.) graced the occasion as the Chief Guest on September 16, 2023.
The Pro-Vice-Vicecellor of CU, Professor Kaji Shahadat Kabir, Ph.D.,
Treasurer Mr. Shaheduzzaman Choudhury, FCA, Controller Mr. Md. Nazrul
Islam and Registrar Professor Mir Akhter Hossain were the special
guests of the programs. The session chair for the occasion was
Professor Abu Zayed Mohammad, Dean of Arts and Social Sciences at City
University.
The day-long program was structured in three parts. The formal session
started at 11.30 a.m. with recitations of the Holy Quran, Gita, Bible,
and Tripitaka, and this program was hosted jointly by Dr. Rahman M.
Mahbub, Head of the Department of English Language and Literature, and
Mr. Zakaria, Head of the Department of Law at CU.

Associate Professor Dr. Rahman M Mahbub, Head of the Department of
English, gave the welcome speech. He told that the motto of the
English department is  to “Learn , Lead and Serve “ and for Learning,
Leading and Serving the human beings they need to practice Discipline,
Integrity, and compassion.

The chief guest, special guests, and session chair were invited to
give their valuable speeches for the outgoing and incoming batches.
Sadia Naznin Nisha and Keya from the Dept. of English and Law
(respectively) on behalf of the 52nd batch and 42nd batch welcomed the
freshers and Nishat Tasnim from the 63rd batch delivered a speech on
behalf of the first-year students.

Respected Vice Chancellor Brig Gen Professor . Dr. Engr. Md.Lutfor
Rahman (Retd.) emphasized the importance of the first day at the
university. He mentioned that every student eagerly awaits, right from
their time of admission, their most remarkable event at the
university, “FRESHER’S RECEPTION.” Therefore, he welcomed all with his
descriptions of the opportunities offered at CU for the students. He
prioritized the disciplined life of a student and strictly forbade the
students to stay away from drugs and sexual harassment since there is
zero tolerance at City University regarding such offenses. He also
congratulated every graduate of the English and Law Departments and
wished them all success in life.

Students should have the mentality of lions, as Pro-Vice Chancellor
Professor Kaji Shahadat Kabir, Ph.D., said. He advised the students of
the outgoing batch to determine the goal and act according to it. He
urged graduating students to engage themselves in innovative work. He
advised them not to forget the discipline and good manners that they
have been taught here. He wished them farewell and the best of luck in
the days ahead. He welcomed the freshers at City University as well.
Controller Mr. Md. Nazrul Islam of CU attended the ceremony as the
special guest. He spoke at the ceremony, congratulating all students
who are going to graduate from CU. He prayed for their success in
life.
On this occasion, the Dean, Professor Abu Zayed Mohammad and the
Controller, Mr. Md. Nazrul Islam spoke. Professor Abu Zayed Mohammad
motivated the incoming and outgoing batches by citing the lines from
Hemingway's "For Whom the Bell Tolls". Like the vice chancellor, he
also urged students to stay away from drugs and any other offenses.

After the speech in the second session, crests were given to the
outgoing students of the 52nd batch of DELL (Department of English
Language and Literature) by the chief guest, special guest, and other
guests, along with the Head of DELL.
The program ended with a cultural program including a fashion show,
dance, comedy show, song, and poem recitation.
