Jamaat ameer warns against repeat of ’AL-style coup’

Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Friday said his party is determined to achieve full-scale reforms and ensure a proper election, warning that any attempt to stage an administrative coup similar to that of the Awami League will be resisted.Speaking as the chief guest at a mass rally organized by the Rangpur city and district units of Jamaat-e-Islami at the Rangpur Zilla School field, Dr Shafiqur alleged that efforts are underway to use black money to influence the upcoming polls.

“We will not allow anyone to manipulate the election like the Awami League has in the past. We are committed to securing reform and fair elections,” he said.

He said that “mob justice” is not a new phenomenon in Bangladesh and has existed since 1972.

“Back then, women’s breasts were cut off, and people were tortured to death. Still, I say, no one has the right to take the law into their own hands,” he added.

Referring to the recent attack on the Patgram police station in Lalmonirhat, he blamed BNP activists for turning the entire country into “another Patgram” through their violent actions.

Dr Shafiqur also expressed concern over the upcoming elections, claiming that Sheikh Hasina had previously conducted a one-sided election but was later forced to flee in the face of mass protests.

“We will not allow another fascist regime like hers to take hold. We will continue our movement until fascism is eradicated,” he declared.

The rally was presided over by Rangpur city Jamaat Ameer ATM Azam Khan. Other speakers included recently released Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam, Secretary General Professor Golam Parwar, Assistant Secretary General Maulana Rafiqul Islam, and central leader Mahbubur Rahman Belal, among others.

During the event, Jamaat introduced its candidates for all 33 constituencies across the eight districts of Rangpur division and expressed strong confidence in securing victories in each of those seats.

From early morning, processions from the eight districts of Rangpur division converged on the rally venue, and by midday, the field had turned into a sea of people.
