A human chain and protest rally have been held in Nilphamari, demanding the immediate implementation of the 'Health Protection Act' and protesting the barbaric attack on Dr. Nasir Islam, a physician at Shariatpur Sadar Hospital.
The protest program was organized under the banner of 'Physicians of All Levels' on Wednesday (May 20) at noon on the Nilphamari General Hospital premises. Following the human chain, a protest meeting was held, addressed by Dr. Abdullah Hil Mafi, Superintendent of Nilphamari General Hospital; Associate Professors (Medicine) Dr. Tozammel Haque and Dr. Mostafa Kamal; Associate Professor (Pediatrics) Dr. Moazzem Hossain; Assistant Professors (Gynecology) Dr. Zubaida Nazneen Mukta and Dr. Hasina Banu; Assistant Professor (Lab Medicine) Dr. Debashish; Dr. Debabrata Halder, Residential Medical Officer (RMO) of the hospital; and Dr. Abdul Awal, Junior Consultant (Pediatrics). The entire program was moderated by Dr. Abdul Matin, Assistant Professor (Medicine).
From the rally, the physicians demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of all the accused involved in the attack. At the same time, a strong demand was raised to enact the 'Healthcare Professionals Protection Act' to ensure the safety of doctors at their workplaces and to criminalize any form of attack on physicians as a 'non-bailable offense'. Expressing deep concern, the coordinator of the program, Assistant Professor Dr. Abdul Matin, said, "Instead of getting justice, the victim doctor is being constantly threatened after the attack, which is highly condemnable. If we do not have security at our workplaces, normal medical services are bound to be disrupted. We demand immediate and fair justice for this.
