The National Citizen Party (NCP) has reiterated its firm stance on receiving the Shapla as its electoral symbol.
The party’s Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary said: “We have no alternative other than the Shapla as our symbol. If we are not granted Shapla, we will fight legally and politically.”
He made the comments on Sunday, while speaking to reporters after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin.
Earlier, around 11am, a five-member NCP delegation held a meeting at the Election Commission. The delegation included Hasnat Abdullah, chief organizer for the southern region, and Sarjis Alam, chief organizer for the northern region.
NCP has long been demanding the Shapla symbol from the Election Commission.
However, last week, the commission excluded Shapla from its reserved list of 115 electoral symbols.
The list was sent to the law ministry for vetting on the same day. NCP has criticized the commission’s decision.
On June 22, while submitting its registration application, NCP requested the Shapla symbol.
Earlier, Nagorik Oikya, led by Mahmudur Rahman Manna, had also sought the same symbol. Both parties held multiple meetings with the Election Commission regarding the matter. Amid the dispute, the commission did not include Shapla in the final list.
