Election Commission mulls issuing NIDs to 16-year-olds

News Desk

The Election Commission (EC) is planning to issue National Identity Cards (NIDs) to all citizens of the country aged 16 and above.

The commission is expected to make a decision in this regard on Monday in a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda. The constitutional body is going to collect information on those born on or before January 1, 2006.

Those interested in getting their NIDs have to go to the Upazila Election Office and apply, or they can register online as well. Citizens will be given NIDs only after completion of biometric registration.

According to Election Commission sources, the commission wants to provide the NIDs as part of the government`s Covid-19 vaccination program. Instead of the existing 18 years, the age bar for getting a NID should be reduced by two years.

The Election Commission last collected information on the citizens in 2019. At that time, the EC collected information on eligible citizens (18 years) as well as on 16-year-olds (born on or before January 1, 2004).

From the data collected in 2019, as many as 6,758,825 people in 2020 and 1,465,046 people in 2021 were included in the final voter list and have already received national identity cards.
