Dengue outbreak: Govt against emergency now despite record cases

Despite continued deaths from, and an alarming number of new cases of, the government still thinks that the time to declare a public health emergency is yet to come given the outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease.

However, it admits the fact that the dengue situation has worsened throughout the country, with Dhaka being the hotspot, saying that dengue has already spread in 60 districts including the capital.

“…But such a situation has not appeared yet that we are unable to give beds to patients in hospitals and give them medicines. The number of dengue patients is still under our control,” said Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque on Saturday.

He was talking to journalists after visiting Mugda Medical College Hospital in the capital.

On June 16, the Directorate General of Health Services (DHGS) also rejected a call from doctors and public health experts to declare an emergency over the dengue crisis.

The calls come amid July registering alarming figures from dengue, with this year's highest single-day toll logged and 30,000 cases surpassed on Saturday.
