After an 8-year hiatus, the dean election of Jahangirnagar University(JU) was held at the Officers Club of the university on Monday, May 15th. The election was scheduled for the post of six deans under six faculties, but due to a lack of competitive candidates in the business studies faculty and the law faculty, the election didn't take place there.
The returning officer of the election, Abu Hasan, who is also the registrar of the university, announced the results at the Officers Club around 4 pm. Prof. Nigar Sultana of the Marketing department was elected as the dean of the business studies faculty as the returning officer scrapped the candidacy of three other teachers for violating the election code. Associate Prof. Tapas Kumar was elected as the dean of the law faculty, as none but Tapas Kumar collected the nomination form for the post.
Prof. Dr. Md. Mozammel Hoque of the Archaeology department was elected as the dean of the arts faculty, while Prof. Bashir Ahmed of the Government & Politics department was elected as the dean of the Social Science faculty.
Prof. Dr. M Abdur Rab of the Mathematics department was elected as the dean of the Mathematical & Physical Sciences faculty, and Prof. Dr. Md. Nuhu Alam of the Botany department was elected as the dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences.A total of 505 votes were cast.
The voting commenced at 9.30 am and concluded at 2 pm amidst a festive atmosphere.
