Anwar Hossain Manju, former lawmaker and chairman of Jatiya Party (Manju), was arrested from the capital's Dhanmondi area on Monday afternoon.
Rabiul Hussain Bhuiyan, joint commissioner (North) of Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, confirmed his arrest.
Manju is reportedly implicated in five murder cases. He was taken to the DB office for interrogation. However, it is yet to be confirmed under which specific case Manju will be officially charged with.
Anwar Hossain Manju, a veteran politician, is a former Member of Parliament from Pirojpur-2 constituency and has held the position of Water Resources Minister in the past.
Manju has a long history of electoral success, having been elected as an MP from the Pirojpur-2 constituency six times (in 1986, 1988, 1991, 1996, 2001, and 2014). However, in the 12th national election, he was defeated by an independent candidate despite running under the ruling party's ‘Boat’ symbol.
His father Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia was the founder of the Dainik Ittefaq. Anwar Hossain Manju was the editor of Ittefaq from 1972-1975.
He supported the Awami League led government during 1996-2001. At that time, he was the communication minister.
