Masud Kamal Tofazzal (30) of Patharghata, Barguna was beaten to death at Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall of Dhaka University (DU) on 'suspicion of theft'.
Meanwhile, Tofazzal's sister-in-law Sharifa Akhter claimed that Tk 2 lakh was demanded from Tofazzal's family before the murder. She claimed this in the media on Thursday.
Sharifa Akhter told the media that yesterday night two men called my phone and identified themself as Dhaka University student and said, "Tofazzal has stolen a mobile phone, he has been detained." Two lakh taka have to be sent to release him." Later I informed his relatives. In the morning I found out that he was killed. I want exemplary justice for those involved in the murder of my brother-in-law Tofajjal.
He said that the victim Tofazzal Hossain is the son of Abdur Rahman of Charduani village of Patharghata Taluk. His father died in a road accident and his mother and brother died of cancer. No member of his family is alive. Because of this, he became mentally unbalanced. He was once associated with Chhatra League politics. Always lived in the village.
Tofazzal's neighbor Litton Talukder said Tofazzal was a brilliant student who had been mentally imbalanced for years. He was not treated as there was no family member. He ate to get his hands on people. Was not involved in theft or any other bad activities in the area. We are saddened to hear the news of his death.
According to family sources, Tofazzal completed his Honors-Masters from Govt Suhrawardy College, Pirojpur. He was associated with politics during his student life. He was the president of Kathaltali Union Chhatra League of Patharghata Upazila.
Tofazzal's father Abdur Rahman died in a road accident in 2011, mother Beauty Begum died of liver cancer in 2013. The only elder brother Nasir worked in the police. He also died of liver cancer in 2023. The family consists only of the eldest brother's wife and his two children.
Tofazzal Hossain was beaten to death at DU's Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall on suspicion of being a thief. He was beaten to death by the students of the university on Wednesday night.
The university administration filed a case in this incident at Shahbag police station yesterday. Mohammad Amanullah, supervisor of the university's estate office, filed the complaint at the Shahbagh police station. In the meantime, the police have arrested four people.
