Leandro Paredes got into physical confrontation with Gavi after FIFA World Cup 2026 final.
FIFA is expected to investigate Argentina after a fight broke out following their defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final. Spain won the match 1-0 after extra time. Ferran Torres scored the winning goal before tensions rose after the final whistle. Several players from both teams became involved in pushing and shoving. Leandro Paredes appeared to grab Spain defender Eric Garcia by the throat during the incident.
Footage also appeared to show Paredes confronting Gavi and pushing the Spain midfielder to the ground. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni quickly stepped in and tried to stop the fight.
FIFA is expected to study the referee’s report, official match papers and video footage before deciding whether to take action. Paredes could face punishment if officials decide that he used a chokehold. The incident could lead to a red card and a possible ban.
Argentina defender Nahuel Molina may also face an investigation. He was seen confronting Spain captain Rodri during the clash. Assistant coach Roberto Ayala could also come under review over an alleged incident involving Dani Olmo. The fight came after a tense final in New Jersey. Argentina played with 10 men after Enzo Fernandez received a red card before Spain found the winning goal in extra time.
