With the theme "Resilience start at Home," The International Disaster Mitigation Day- 2026" was observed in Cumilla’s Chouddagram with colorful events.
Marking the day, a vibrant rally, a public awareness drill on disaster management, and a discussion meeting were organized on the upazila parishad premises on Tuesday morning (October 13).
Initiated by the Upazila Administration & Department of Disaster Management(DDM), the program placed special emphasis on building awareness regarding actions to be taken during disasters such as earthquakes, fires, and lightning strikes. The initiative also highlighted the importance of taking preparations at the family and community levels to mitigate disaster risks.
The event was chaired by Chouddagram Upazila Parishad Administrator and Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shahadat Hossain. Members of the Fire Service and Civil Defense, Upazila administration officials, representatives from various departments, and local dignitaries were present.
Through the programs organized for the day, the core messages conveyed were the enhancement of public awareness to reduce Disaster damage and the implementation of swift, effective measures during emergency situations.
In his speech at the discussion meeting, Chouddagram Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Shahadat Hossain stated, "While natural disasters cannot be entirely prevented, proper preparedness, awareness, and timely actions can significantly minimize the loss of life and property. The administration is always prepared to make Chouddagram Upazila capable of handling any disaster."
Upazila Project Implementation Officer Engr Md Abul Kalam Azad conducted the event, highlighting the field-level activities of the disaster management committee and urging the general public to remain maximally vigilant during any Disaster.
The event was also attended by Upazila Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Md. Mahfuzur Rahman, Pourashava BNP President G.M. Taher Polashi, Upazila Jamaat Working Council Member Md. Joynal Abedin Patwary, Pourashava BNP Joint General Secretary Delowar Hossain Patwary Dulal, Upazila BNP Organizing Secretary Md. Gias Uddin, UP Chairmen Abu Taher, A.K. Khokon, Zakir Mahmud, Mir Hossain, along with officials and employees of various government offices, local public representatives, fire service personnel, representatives of social and volunteer organizations, teachers, students, and media workers.
