A human chain was formed in front of Hazrat Shahjalal (R) International Airport on Monday (9 August) morning, demanding to rename the airport Zia International Airport.

Earlier, several hundred BNP leaders and activists gather in front of the airport to attend the programme.

On 16 February 2010, the Awami League government decided to rename the establishments named after late president Ziaur Rahman including the Zia International Airport.

As per the decision, Zia International Airport’s name was changed to Hazrat Shahjalal (R) International Airport (HSIA).

It also decided to reinstate original names of the structures, which were changed by the BNP-Jamaat coalition government between 2001 and 2006.

The decisions later came into effect with government's official notification
