BNP leader shot dead in Raozan

A local BNP leader was shot dead in broad daylight in Raozan upazila of Chattogram on Saturday afternoon. The deceased Maksudul Haque Chowdhury Masud, 45, was the senior joint convenor of the Rangunia Upazila Jubo Dal. He was the son of the late Khaled Chowdhury of Betagi union in the upazila.

Local sources report he was known as a close associate of Rangunia BNP lawmaker Humam Quader Chowdhury. According to police and witnesses, the incident occurred around 1:30pm near Pahartali Bazar adjacent to the Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET). A group of miscreants carried out an attack on Masud Chowdhury while he was at the market.

The assailants reportedly held a firearm to his head and fired at point-blank range before quickly fleeing the scene. He died on the spot. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of the Rangunia Circle Mohammad Belayet Hossain confirmed the incident said that police units were deployed to the scene immediately to bring the situation under control. Preliminary police findings suggest the killing may be linked to political rivalry or a long-standing dispute between two local factions.

As of now, no individuals have been identified or apprehended in connection with the murder. Police authorities have said that an investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause of the murder and to identify those involved. An operation to track down the perpetrators is ongoing.
