300 years old traditional Galua Paka Mosque of Jhalokathi

Galua Mosque in Rajapur Upazila of Jhalokathi was built 300 years ago. This mosque is located in Durgapur village one kilometer east of Galua Bazar area on Rajapur-Bhandaria highway. According to the locals about the history of the mosque, a pious man named Mahmud Khan Akan (Mamuji) built this mosque. It is believed to have been built in 1122 BC. An inscription is found near the mosque and it gives information about its construction period. There is a popular mith among the people of the area that when the bushes were being cleared for the renovation work of this mosque, a big poisonous snake came out of the forest. Later, when a part of the construction area was opened, the snakes left the place, according to the then Pir Mahtab Uddin (R.) of Galua.
Azizul Haque, an archaeological researcher of Rajapur and a retired teacher of the Department of Islamic Studies of Rajapur Government College, said that this mosque is located one kilometer east of Galua Bazar adjacent to Bara Bari. The mosque was built 300 years ago. It was built in 1122 by a local influential Muslim named Mahmudjan Akand. The date of construction of this mosque can be found from an abandoned rock pit. Its arms are quite wide. This mosque is made of brick. The original bricks are no longer visible as the mosque is now versioned.
He also said that on the eve of independence, when the mosque was about to collapse, the mosque was renovated with the efforts of a local philanthropist.
The verandah in front of the mosque has been extended. In 1999, the Bangladesh government brought this mosque under the archeology department. Because of that, the mosque was renovated by allocating money from the government. Worshipers are still offering prayers in the traditional paved mosque. Locals are very proud of this mosque. On the other hand, there are various types of folklore based on imagination.
