Two people tragically died from electrocution while attempting to connect a power supply to an irrigation pump for fishing in the Kachukata Union of Nilphamari Sadar Upazila. Another person was injured in the incident and is currently undergoing treatment at Nilphamari Sadar Hospital. The tragic accident occurred at around 9:00 AM on Wednesday, June 10, in the Babur Bazar area. The deceased have been identified as Jalal Uddin (45), son of Mojibor Rahman from Hajipara village in Kachukata Union, and Mujibur Rahman (50), son of Abdur Rauf from Kutirpara Nodir Par village in the neighboring Panchapukur Union. Mujibur's son, Mithu Islam (30), who sustained severe injuries, was rushed to Nilphamari Sadar Hospital in critical condition. Hospital sources confirmed that the on-duty doctors are keeping him under close observation.
According to local sources, preparations were underway to drain a pond using an irrigation pump in the Babur Bazar area to catch fish. While installing an irrigation motor and connecting it to the power line, several people were accidentally electrocuted. Jalal Uddin and Mujibur Rahman were critically injured on the spot. Locals rescued them and rushed them to the hospital, where doctors declared them dead. Mithu Islam was also severely injured in the same incident. As news of the incident spread, a deep shadow of grief engulfed the entire area. Heart-wrenching cries of the victims' relatives filled the air. Local dignitaries and political leaders expressed their profound condolences.
Abdur Rauf, Chairman of Kachukata Union Parishad, stated, "Two people died and one was injured after being electrocuted while trying to connect an irrigation pump to drain water from a pond for fishing. The incident is extremely heartbreaking." He added that the Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) has been informed of the matter, and steps will be taken shortly to secure government assistance for the families. He also expressed his condolences and promised personal financial support to the grieving families. Wahidul Islam Sarkar, Chairman of Panchapukur Union Parishad, also expressed his deep sorrow over the tragedy. Zillur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nilphamari Sadar Police Station, confirmed the incident, stating that upon receiving the news, a police team recovered the bodies and sent them to Nilphamari Sadar Hospital for autopsy. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident. Meanwhile, locals pointed out that such incidents frequently happen due to negligence and lack of caution while handling electricity. They urged for increased public awareness regarding the use of such water pumps and demanded strict compliance with safety guidelines to prevent future tragedies.
