TIB-Sanak Human Chain in Nilphamari

The Awareness Citizens Committee (Sanak) and Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) held a massive human chain and rally in Nilphamari to mark World Environment Day. The joint program was held at the town’s Chowrangi Moar on Sunday at 10:00 AM, demanding "Effective steps to transition to renewable energy now to tackle environmental pollution and climate change." Local environmentalists and representatives of civil society participated in the event.

Presided over by Sanak President Md. Aktarual Alam, the human chain was addressed by Sanak members Nasima Begum and Mizanur Rahman Litu, YES member Farzana Akter Arifa, ACG member Nirmal Roy, and TIB Area Coordinator Asaduzzaman Asad. Speakers expressed their frustration, stating that despite Bangladesh being one of the most vulnerable countries globally due to climate change, the desired transparency is missing in environmental protection projects. Therefore, dependence on fossil fuels must be reduced immediately to move toward eco-friendly green energy.

While sincerely applauding the government's initiative to plant 25 crore (250 million) trees, they strongly demanded governance, freedom from corruption, transparency, and accountability in all government and private projects related to the environment, climate, and development. At the same time, a 12-point specific recommendation was presented to the government through the administration to protect the environment, prevent pollution, and formulate sustainable energy policies at local and national levels. The human chain concluded with an announcement to continue this social movement until the demands are met.
