Police have recovered the body of an elderly woman named Marufa Begum (60) by digging up the floor of her own room in Nilphamari's Kishorganj upazila. It is alleged that her eldest son, Jewel Miah (40), buried the body inside the house after killing her by hitting her on the head. The accused Jewel has been on the run since the incident. The body was recovered late Wednesday night (June 3) from Uttar Barabhita Maydanpara village under Barabhita union of the upazila. The deceased Marufa Begum was the wife of the late Ashraf Ali of that area.
According to police and local sources, Marufa Begum had been missing since last Monday (June 1). The deceased's younger son, Labin Miah (who lives in Dhaka and came home on Eid vacation), returned from his father-in-law's house on Wednesday afternoon and started searching for his mother after not finding her. In the afternoon, Labin's wife went to lift the mattress of the bed in the elder brother Jewel's room and noticed clotted blood stains there. Subsequently, while following the blood stains, they noticed that the soil on one side of the room's floor was fresh and cracked. Becoming suspicious, they immediately informed the police.
Upon receiving the information, Kishorganj থানা police rushed to the spot at night, dug up the floor of the room, and recovered Marufa Begum's body. According to the preliminary assumption of the police, she was murdered at least two days ago by being hit on the head with a heavy object, and the body was buried under the floor to conceal it. The body was sent to the District Sadar Hospital morgue this Thursday morning (June 4) for an autopsy. Lutfor Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kishorganj Police Station, confirmed the incident and stated that it is primarily assumed that the son, Jewel, is involved in this murder. Efforts are underway to arrest him. Additionally, Jewel's wife, Hasi Begum (35), and son, Golam Rabbi (18), have been taken into police custody for interrogation. Preparations are underway to file a murder case regarding this incident.
