The activity of the Nilphamari District Police in controlling cybercrime and preventing digital fraud has seen a remarkable increase. Over the past six months, from January to June this year, the district police have arrested 61 individuals in 22 cases filed under the Cyber Security Act. During the same period, prompt action by the Cyber Cell led to the recovery of 20 lost smartphones and 9,000 BDT mistakenly transferred to another Nagad account.
On Monday, the recovered mobile phones and money were officially handed over to their rightful owners at a special event organized at the Nilphamari Superintendent of Police (SP) office. District Superintendent of Police Md. Farhad Hossain Khan handed over the items to the beneficiaries in person.
It was informed at the event that a specialized 'Cyber Cell' was established under the district police to ensure technology-driven modern policing. Based on General Diaries (GD), the cell works round the clock to recover lost or stolen phones, combat online financial fraud, and curb digital gambling and fake IDs. Operations are also ongoing against those involved in online visa fraud and casino operations.
Expressing satisfaction upon receiving his money back, one victim stated that BDT 9,000 was mistakenly sent to a different Nagad account. After failing to recover the money despite several attempts, he filed a complaint with the Cyber Cell. Following the complaint, the police swiftly retrieved his hard-earned money. Similarly, other citizens expressed their gratitude to the district police upon receiving their lost phones back.
Nilphamari District Superintendent of Police Md. Farhad Hossain Khan said,
"Our main goal is to make Nilphamari 100% free from cybercrime. Members of the Cyber Cell are working 24 hours a day to control fake social media IDs, prevent hacking, and tackle online fraud."
Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Mohsin, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) A.B.M. Faizul Islam, and other senior officials of the district police were present at the event.
