A torpedo-like object has been spotted floating in a canal in the Moudubi area of Rangabali upazila of Patuakhali.

Locals spotted the object in the Bhangar canal near Jahajmara beach on Sunday morning.

According to police and locals, the object entered the canal from the Bay of Bengal through the Ravanabad channel.

Police reached the spot after being informed by locals.

Rangabali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Helal Uddin said police officers were sent to the spot and the Coast Guard was informed about the incident.

The contingent commander of the Coast Guard Rangabali Outpost, Abul Kalam Azad, said: "Our team in the Andharmanik River is going to the spot. From what I could see, it could be a torpedo, not a missile."

"Torpedoes are very heavy. It usually operates underwater. Since it has come up to the surface, I think it has been used or damaged. However, if there is any air inside, there is a possibility of an explosion. That is why the bomb disposal unit may go and check it. Action will be taken based on the report of our team that is going to assess it," he added.
