Fraud under the Identity of Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary: Case Filed in Singra, Chhat

A case has been filed at Singra Police Station in Natore over allegations of fraud and extortion by impersonating an office staff member of Atiqur Rahman Rumon, the Additional Press Secretary to the Prime Minister. Following the filing of the case on Friday night, police arrested a Chhatra League leader named Abu Huraira.
The arrested Abu Huraira served as the Joint Secretary of the Singra Pourashava Chhatra League. He hails from Balua-Basua village in Singra Upazila, Natore.
With the approval of Atiqur Rahman Rumon, the case was filed on his behalf by Abul Kalam Azad, the Rajshahi and Rangpur Division Coordinator of the BNP Media Cell.
According to the case statement and police sources, Huraira projected himself as an influential person by claiming contacts with various political leaders and important personalities over WhatsApp and mobile calls. There are also allegations that he demanded money by promising to secure political nominations.
Police stated that Tk 1,785 was taken through bKash in this manner. The application requested legal action after verifying the relevant mobile phone numbers, WhatsApp conversations, and digital transaction details.
Natore Superintendent of Police Mohammad Shariful Haq said that one person has been arrested in connection with the incident. During initial interrogation, he confessed to the fraud. The Detective Branch (DB) of Natore District Police is investigating this sensitive case. Further investigation will reveal whether there are other incidents tied to this.
Police further mentioned that Abu Huraira has four prior criminal cases filed against him in various police stations between 2021 and 2023. Among these, one case was filed at Pabna Sadar Police Station in 2021, one under the Digital Security Act at Dhanmondi Police Station in Dhaka in 2022, and two additional cases at two Dhaka police stations in 2023.
Additionally, records show that a civil lawsuit was filed against him on December 6, 2025, in the Cognizance Court of Gabtali Police Station, Bogura.
