Attack on int’l students: Bangladeshi students in Kyrgyzstan advised to stay indoors

Bangladeshi students residing in Kyrgyzstan have been advised to stay indoors amid safety concerns following attacks by local mobs reportedly on the hostels housing international students, including from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, in the country`s capital Bishkek. According to local media, the violence erupted following a brawl between Kyrgyz and international students, specifically Pakistanis and Egyptians, on 13 May where a local student was injured. Later, tensions escalated as foreign students were reportedly attacked on 16 and on17 May. The Kyrgyz government said four foreign nationals have been arrested following mob violence in Bishkek on the night of 17 May that injured at least 28 people, including several foreigners, and appeared to be directed against foreign students and migrants. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic in a statement said at present the situation in Bishkek was "absolutely calm and fully under control". Meanwhile, a few Bangladeshi students in Bishkek have sought help from the authorities concerned. "We are here, five Bangladeshi girls. We are inside our apartment right now. Some people are gathering in front of our apartment. Please help us," Samia Kabir, one of the Bangladeshi students at the International School of Medicine, Kyrgyzstan, told UNB today. "We have been asked by the authorities to stay inside. We hear some noises from other apartments nearby…some Pakistanis are likely to be there," Samia added. Mustafa, another student residing in a slightly distant location from the main city, said the number of Bangladeshi students is currently over 1,000 in Kyrgyzstan. He said they are relatively safer than those living in Bishkek. The Embassy of Bangladesh in Uzbekistan, concurrently accredited to the Kyrgyz Republic, has asked the Bangladeshi students in Bishkek to stay indoors to avoid any risks. "The Embassy is also in touch with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyz Republic on this matter. As per the information released by the relevant authority of Kyrgyz Republic, the situation is under control of law enforcing agencies," the embassy said in a notification yesterday. "However, the students are advised to stay indoors for the moment and get in touch with the Embassy," it added. For any issues, they have been asked to contact Md Nazmul Alam, minister, Embassy of Bangladesh in Uzbekistan, via the emergency number, +998930009780. "Our mission in Uzbekistan is looking into the matter. So far, we have not received any reports of injuries of any Bangladeshis. We are in touch with our Mission. We will share a complete report soon," a senior official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Today AL is the strongest party: PM Hasina on homecoming day

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday said her party – Bangladesh Awami League (AL) is the strongest, largest and the most credible political party in the country now. “Today Awami League is the strongest and biggest organisation in Bangladesh. It`s a reality. The most acceptable party among the people is the Awami League,” she said. The AL president, Sheikh Hasina, made the remarks when her party leaders and activists came to Ganabhaban to greet her on her historic Homecoming Day. Recalling her election as the President of Bangladesh Awami League in her absence before her return to home on May 17, 1981, the PM said she had no experience to lead a big party like AL at that time. It was definitely a big responsibility for her to lead AL, she added. She said the party has overcome conspiracies on many occasions. "Conspiracies are hatched every time and we overcome them. We have to keep it up,” she added. Recollecting the day she had returned home ending six years of forced exile, the AL president said she had been welcomed by hundreds of thousands of people defying the storm and rain on that day. She said when she returned to Bangladesh in 1981, the country was then run by war criminals and the killers of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with most of his family members. The prime minister said she returned to the country despite knowing she might have been killed as she had trust in the countrymen and leaders and activists of Awami League. “I’d returned home with a conviction as the desire with which the Father of the Nation made the country independent was not fulfilled. Rather the condition of the people deteriorated further,” she said. She said now her government has been able to implement at least to some extent the desire and the spirit with which Bangabandhu made the country independent. “All my strength and courage I’ve got from my parents,” said Hasina. Talking about AL’s role in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic, she said, “We’ve been able to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic as we have a well-organised political party and its associate bodies.” She said no other political party except the Awami League stood beside the people during the period of Covid-19 pandemic and many AL leaders and workers sacrificed their lives in doing so. "No other organisation except Awami League does make this sacrifice for the people of Bangladesh," said Sheikh Hasina, who has been steering the Awami League since 1981. The PM said her government has been able to change the country. “But we’ve to progress further in future,” she added. Earlier in the morning, AL leaders and activists led by its General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader greeted their party chief with flowers at Ganabhaban, marking her 44th homecoming Day. Leaders and activists of the associate and friendly bodies of the Awami League were also present at that time.

India Hosts 6th Session of the International Solar Alliance Assembly in New Delhi

India Hosts 6th Session of the International Solar Alliance Assembly in New Delhi

The Sixth Assembly of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) convened in New Delhi today, presided over by Raj Kumar Singh, Minister of Power and New & Renewable Energy, Government of India, who serves as the President of the ISA Assembly. Ministers from 20 countries and delegates representing 116 Member and Signatory countries gathered for this important event, according to a press release. In his opening remarks, Raj Kumar Singh emphasized the crucial role of renewable energy sources in addressing global energy challenges. He stated that renewable energy has the potential to supply 65 percent of the world`s total electricity by 2030 and decarbonize 90 percent of the power sector by 2050. The International Solar Alliance is committed to making solar energy the preferred energy source, attracting investments, and ensuring ample energy availability to meet growing global demands. To support this, ISA has expanded its Viability Gap Funding (VGF) mechanism, increasing the grant to 35% of the project cost based on the capacity and needs of member countries. Co-President of the Assembly, Chrysoula Zacharopoulou, France`s Minister of State for Development, Francophonie, and International Partnerships, emphasized France`s commitment to the ISA. France has provided significant financial support for solar projects, including the construction of the Onigbolo solar power plant in Benin, bringing 25 megawatts of clean energy to the people of Benin. She emphasized the importance of supporting partner countries in their energy transition plans, said the release. Dr Ajay Mathur, Director General of the International Solar Alliance, stressed the need to accelerate the deployment of solar energy, particularly in developing countries and for applications that enhance the daily lives of those without reliable energy access. ISA is facilitating over 9.5 GW of solar applications in 55 developing countries and providing training to thousands of people in supporting solar energy. The organization is working on establishing STAR Centers as hubs of technology, knowledge, and expertise in solar energy, it said. The Assembly also discussed the ISA`s initiatives, including the development of solar mini-grids to provide universal energy access and mechanisms to attract private sector investment through guarantees provided by the Global Solar Facility. In May 2020, ISA initiated Demonstration Projects in Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to showcase scalable solar technology applications and build the capacity of beneficiary member countries. Four projects, including solarization of the parliament building of the Republic of Malawi, solarization of health care centers in Fiji, installation of solar-powered cold storage in Seychelles, and solarization of a school in Kiribati, were inaugurated, it added. Singh dedicated these projects to the respective countries, highlighting ISA`s commitment to advancing the cause of energy transition through solar energy. The Assembly serves as the apex decision-making body of ISA and meets annually to assess the progress of solar energy deployment and discuss key initiatives related to energy access, energy security, and energy transition. The Sixth Assembly of the International Solar Alliance demonstrated the commitment of member countries to harnessing solar energy to address global energy and environmental challenges, the release also said.
